Expert Team

Risk Management

All team members have the prime responsibility to manage risk at every stage of every project.

Identify;   Report;   Assess;   Control;   Act;   Assign Responsibility;   Document;   Close-out.

Safety in Design (SiD) is our commitment to deliver projects which are safe to construct, operate, and maintain.  Our professionalism compels us to constantly check for compliance with all the Acts, Regulations and Standards applicable to the application.

Process Engineering

Our Process Expert has over 40 years’ experience in the minerals industry with expertise in the process engineering design, process equipment sizing and selection, geometallurgical surveys, feasibility studies for emerging and developing projects, project development and site commissioning.

His past experience in roles of Process Engineering Manager, State Sales Manager, Business Development Manager, Process Applications Engineer, Senior Metallurgist and Marketing Manager brings a valued maturity and confidence to the team.

Mechanical Engineering

Mark Botes FIEAust CPEng NER (Owner BMmech\Principal Mechanical) has 35+ years’ experience in engineering with expertise in both design and project management, including materials handling in mining, agricultural & steelmaking sectors, while in positions as Associate & Principal Innovator, Group Manager Engineering, Design Manager and Principal Mechanical Engineer.

With a passion for functional machine design & facility layout, his designs are efficiently integrated with mining infrastructure, drawing from extensive operational experience in both underground and opencast mining.

Flow Modelling

Corin Holmes MSc Eng (Operations Manager at Jenike & Johanson Pty Ltd)

Jenike & Johanson (J&J) are the world’s leading bulk material engineering firm with expertise in powder and bulk solid storage, handling, conveying and processing.  Together we create value by assisting our clients to improve the efficiency, reliability, and safety of their operations by preventing, eliminating, or reducing problems related to bulk material flow, storage, conveying, or processing.  The flow behavior of bulk solids is deceptively complex and is often treated with contempt during the design stage hence there are plenty of “opportunities for improvement”, in almost every industry.

Working for J&J, as a bulk solid handling engineer with 18+ years’ experience, Corin gets plenty of opportunity to indulge his passion, of applying Bulk Solids Handling science, to designs which provide solutions for flow issues.

Structural Engineering

Richard Wardrop BSc BEng CPEng NER (ARP Business Owner/Principal Structural Engineer)

An experienced structural engineer having spent more than 20 years in the engineering, mining and heavy industrial engineering fields.  This included work for international consultancies and operational companies on a variety of capital and maintenance type projects.  In addition to office based detailed engineering design work, he has spent a significant time managing projects on site, demanding a practical “hands on” approach, which led to an excellent understanding of the many nuances of the full project cycle from concept through detailed design and construction.

Structural capability is supported by various computer analysis software packages such as Spacegass, Strand7, SolidWorks and 3D Computer Aided Design.

Electrical Engineering

Steven Myers CEngT, NETR (Senior Electrical Eng) is a Charted Electrical Engineering Technologist with 20 years experience in Mining, infrastructure and Building Services.

Experienced in HV distributions, LV distributions, lighting and small power design.  Worked on various small brownfield projects, replacement of electrical equipment (HV switchgear & UPS), upgrade to Rio Tinto Paraburdoo reclaimers and large greenfield projects like Fortescue’s Iron Bridge.

Instrumentation & Control Engineering

Steven Myers CEngT, NETR (Senior I&C Eng) is also experienced in instrumentation and control systems.

Roles range from Project Definition, Site Engineer, to Project Manager on various power generation, iron ore and nickel projects.  Instrumentation projects include Roy Hill Brownfields Ultrafine Recovery Project, various Nickel West update projects, and renovation of a reclaimer for Rio Tinto.

Design Modelling & Drafting

Wayne Pearson DipEng (Mech) (Senior SMP Designer at PEARSON Technical Services) has 28+ years’ experience in mechanical design and drafting.  He began 3D CAD modelling over 25 years ago.  His work has covered materials handling, food & beverage, agriculture, as well as mineral sampling and analysis equipment, robotics & automation, cranes and lifting equipment, road transport equipment and rail servicing.

Structures, process piping & equipment and excursions into the electrical world have added to his portfolio.

Initially working in AutoCAD 2D and 3D, Wayne now specialises in Autodesk Inventor, harnessing the power of parametric modelling.  Wayne is also proficient in Bentley Pro Structures, Open Plant Modeller and SolidWorks.

His passion as designer is machines that move, where function and interaction present challenges.  His ‘hands-on’ approach results in designs that are practical and safe to build and operate.

Estimating

Our Estimating Expert has 35+ years’ experience in mine process plants, transport, port infrastructure development oil and gas process systems, gas compression, power systems, rail infrastructure, manufacturing and fabrication.  He is experienced in all aspects of process construction associated with Hematite, Magnetite, Gold, Uranium, Nickel, Copper and Mineral sands.

Successfully managed multiple studies from scoping studies up to $2.7 billion dollar bankable feasibility studies, directly managed construction projects up to 600,000 direct man-hours and managed mine start-up through engineering, approvals, drilling to production. His projects experience has lead him to work in Australia, Ghana West Africa, Angola, Fiji, Indonesia and the UK.

Capability Statement

At BMmech, Mark Botes (Owner\Principal Mechanical) brings thirty-plus years of mining industry experience, a wealth of materials handling and ore processing knowledge.  This knowledge will always be a part of the BMmech SERVICE, however, beyond the mining industry related works, consulting to the grain handling sector has helped shape the BMmech VISION to offer services into agriculture, construction, fabrication & tooling.
Design projects often require contributions from multiple engineering disciplines.  BMmech provides integrated engineering services by collaborating with specialist professionals for a multi-disciplinary capability.
Our collaborative expert team brings knowledge and learnings from the collective experience to produce wholistic design solutions which are cost effective and timely in delivery.  BMmech DISCIPLINES include Process & Mechanical, Flow Modelling, Structural, Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation, Surveying, Design Modelling & Drafting, Estimating and Risk Management.
The team delivers BMmech SERVICES for Functional & Detailed Design, Safety & Risk Review, Calculation Checks, and Peer Review.

Frequently Asked Questions  (FAQs)

How is BMmech insured?

Public Liability (PL) and Professional Indemnity (PI) insurances are to the maximum values available for consulting engineers.  As BMmech’s collaborative team is made up of trusted professionals, all of whom are individually insured, BMmech carries those insurances required for the Principal only and has no need for Workers’ Compensation (WC) insurance.

Individual specialists who do not carry their own PL and PI insurances are engaged through an agent (TS Staffing Group) who carries the required insurances.

BMmech maintains a record of insurance hierarchy for each project.

How are Designers engaged?

Several freelance SMP-Designers and ‘designer-only’ companies\offices are engaged as required as part of the Collaborative Team, located in Perth, and Melbourne.

Engineers are expected prepare a 'design brief' for each scope, including layout model-sketches in either 2D or 3D.  Layouts are developed by the engineer to a point where the layout options are agreed with the team and the Client, and the first round of Safety-in-Design (SiD) assessment is recorded.

The design brief is then issued to the drafting designer as the basis for detail design.

How are rates determined, applied & charged?

BMmech has a Vendor Number and\or MSA (Master Service Agreement) in place with each Client.

The MSA includes BMmech charge-out-rates which apply for two years.

There is also an MSA in place with each of the collaborative team members which reads back‑to‑back with the Client MSAs and includes a ‘Contractor rate’ schedule of rates to correspond with each major Client.
